Survey on biomethane transportation system

In Finland, the natural gas grid is limited, and at the moment there is only one biomethane filling station outside the gas grid in Central Finland. To expand the network of fillings stations it is essential to generate a cost efficient biomethane transportation system. The subcontract

GasHighWay at NGV 2010 Rome

The NGV2010, the 12th IANGV Biennal Conference and Exhibition, was hold this year at New Fair of Rome with the aim of bringing together all the main leading actors of the NGV segment. More than 200 companies and organizations (fleet operators, automotive, distributors) including conference papers and exhibitors, have presented their products, projects and ideas from over 50 countries by representing one of the largest NGV event in 2010.

Creating a Revolution in Transport has been the main theme for this year's natural gas vehicle conference in Rome. The perception that natural gas is short term, inefficient, unsafe, and non-renewable has to change and national and international regulation should be formulated in order to refresh this old perception.

In most conference sessions technological improvements in terms of components and NGVs have been presented with a particular reference to the environmental benefits coming from the use of this fuel. In particular biomethane has been recognized as a sustainable option if directly injected into the gas grid.

During the conference session "Refueling Infrastructure”, Mr. Fabio Sagnelli of Environment Park (Italy) presented the GasHighWay project by analyzing its aims, target-groups, methodology, the main results obtained after the first year of works and the expected outcomes.

In particular the Italian situation has been analyzed with specific references to Italian biogas/biomethane potentiality, its economic feasibility and all the legislative barriers that should be overcome by giving strength to the idea that biomethane and natural gas are complementary fuels.
